9x12 & Large Area Rugs

A 9x12 or larger area rug is built for rooms where you want every piece of furniture, not just the front legs, resting on the rug. This size suits open floor plans, great rooms, and larger dining rooms where a table and chairs need to stay fully grounded even when chairs are pulled out. In a living room, a 9x12 can comfortably hold a sectional, two accent chairs, and a coffee table with even bare floor showing around the edges.

Planning for an oversized rug

Start by measuring the full seating or dining footprint, including chair pull-out space in a dining room, since chairs should stay on the rug even when someone sits down. In open floor plans, a 9x12 or 10x14 rug can define a living area within a larger space without walls, which helps the room feel intentional rather than empty. Because oversized rugs are a bigger investment of floor space, it's worth taping out the exact dimensions on your floor beforehand to confirm walkways and doorways still clear comfortably.
